Custom EHRs for U.S. value-based care providers

Challenge

Value-based care providers face interesting challenges, having to implement out-of-the ordinary workflows while managing complex patient charts securely. Traditional EHRs struggle to deliver a user experience that clinicians enjoy and helps them be productive. These providers often sit at the intersection of many multi-directional data feeds (claims processing in-and-out, RCM solutions, partner EHRs integrations, CMS requirements…), further complexifying their operational landscape.

Solution

We chose to implement custom EHR solutions based on FHIR; a combination of Medplum as a server, and our own bonFHIR toolkit for the frontend and workflow automation. Leveraging FHIR for our domain model proved to be a huge win, as we could rely on a mature foundation that set us up for future enhancements.

Result

An integrated user experience that clinicians love to use—a striking difference from the EHRs they were accustomed to. This significantly increased productivity, reducing the amount of work medical assistants need to perform (via automation), and increased retention of professionals, who could focus on delivering patient care.
